the project is an online magazine powered by a super customized installation of wordpress.

it includes a full content management system where people can sign up for memberships, become contributors, write posts, upload pictures, and add events!

dont belong also fully integrates with their flickr account, youtube, and myspace!!  we also went ahead and built the a custom myspace page that automatically streams content from the website to the page - so no updating is necessary for the myspace page and it always has fresh content!!!  sweet, huh?

the list goes on. as it turns out, most people don’t actually know what “vectorize” means.

benefits

as you can see above, the bitmap example is pixelated when enlarged.  one of the largest benefits to vector art is that when you scale it, quality is not lost.  those nice crisp lines are always there.

and that’s not just scaling up (like to billboard size), scaling vector art down to even 1″ x 1″ will usually look pretty good if its made right.  that is because vector art usually contains less complexity and less colors.

since there are less colors and complexity to vectors, they usually look good in any colors.  which means if you have a good vector logo and you need to get that brochure or letter to a client, but can’t get full color printing in time, you can print it in two colors or black & white at your office and your client will never know the difference!

and if you have a good designer, they will give you your logo in a .eps file or an illustrator (.ai) file - im sure you’ve heard those words from a designer or printer before - and the logo will have a transparent background.

so, the benefits are:

1. scalability: artwork retains quality at almost any size, big or small
2. less complexity and colors - looks good with almost any application
3. transparent background.
4. i’m sure there are more that i’m missing

not to mention the style!   vector logos have a certain hip/corporate simplicity to them - as if you could put all those things together.

downfalls

as far as i can see there aren’t many, but as mentioned above, vector graphics should be less complex and should have fewer colors.  this may be a problem for you if you really want those cool shadows and textures and shiny sparkles and 3-d environment and pictures of people or yourself or your dog!!!

a lot of effects can be accomplished with vector art using the proper application of gradients, but your not going to get that “real-to-life” feel with vector art.  usually vectors come across as an icon or symbol.

vectorizing something is not always possible and is a drawn-out process for your designer.  don’t be surprised if they want to charge a hefty penny for that service.
